You Are Not Alone: Finding God in Moments of Loneliness
Loneliness is one of the most universal experiences of the human condition. At times, it can feel as though no one truly sees or understands us. Whether it comes from physical isolation, emotional distance, or spiritual desolation, loneliness can be profoundly painful. Yet, Scripture reminds us that even in our loneliest moments, we are never truly alone.
Loneliness in Scripture
The Bible speaks to the reality of loneliness and offers profound comfort:
Psalm 34:18: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." This verse assures us that God is near to us in our suffering, even when we cannot feel His presence.
Isaiah 41:10: "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." God’s promise to be with us extends to every season of life.
Matthew 28:20: "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Jesus’ final words to His disciples are a reminder that His presence is unceasing.
John 15:15: "I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends." In Christ, we have the friendship of a Savior who knows us intimately and loves us fully.
Connecting to God Through Lectio Divina
One powerful way to encounter God in loneliness is through Lectio Divina, a traditional practice of meditating on Scripture. Latin for “divine reading,” Lectio Divina transforms Scripture from words on a page into a personal encounter with the living God.
Here’s how to practice it:
Read (Lectio): Slowly and prayerfully read a short passage of Scripture. Let the words sink into your heart.
Meditate (Meditatio): Reflect on the passage. What word, phrase, or image stands out to you? What might God be saying to you through this?
Pray (Oratio): Speak to God about what you have read and experienced. Share your feelings of loneliness and ask for His guidance and comfort.
Contemplate (Contemplatio): Rest in God’s presence. Let go of words and simply be with Him, allowing His love to fill your heart.
How Lectio Divina Helps
Through Lectio Divina, you open your heart to God’s word and allow it to transform your experience of loneliness. The Scriptures remind you of God’s love, and prayer draws you into a relationship where you are deeply known and cared for. When loneliness feels overwhelming, this practice can help you experience God’s companionship and bring peace to your spirit.
A Closing Thought
Loneliness may be a common human experience, but it is not one we face alone. God’s Word and presence are always available to us. By turning to Him in prayer and Scripture, we discover that the One who created us also walks with us, offering His unending love and comfort.
Let the words of Deuteronomy 31:6 resonate in your heart: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you."
In your loneliness, may you find the truth that you are seen, known, and loved by the One who is always with you.
Being lonely can certainly be transformed into something that is more beneficial than one can imagine. St John Paul the Great wrote about what he called "Original Solitude," as he reflected on the creation of man in the Book of Genesis. He says that solitude can lead to self-awareness. And what does that bring to a lonely person? The reality that you are a unique creature of God and very special in His eyes. Being a special and extremely loved work of the "Potter's Hands." should make you feel that you really aren't ever alone, that you possess a nature unlike any creation in the world, and that you are worth everything to Him. For "In Him we move, and have our being," (Acts 17:28) With God so near to us, most especially in the "Word made flesh," are we ever alone?
