Dear Friends in Christ,
The joyous celebration of Christmas is still fresh in our hearts—a season filled with the promise of Emmanuel, God with us. Yet, as beautiful as this time of year can be, it is also true that life’s challenges don’t always pause for the holidays. For some, this season may highlight personal struggles, losses, or uncertainties that weigh heavily on the soul.
In moments like these, we are reminded of the enduring truth that the light of faith, hope, and love sustains us, even in times of difficulty.
Today’s Gospel reading from Matthew 4:12-17; 23-25 reflects this hope beautifully. As Jesus begins His public ministry, He fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy:
"The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death, light has arisen" (Mt 4:16).
The light of Christ enters a world burdened by sin, pain, and suffering. He proclaims the Kingdom of Heaven, heals the sick, and brings comfort to the brokenhearted. His presence doesn’t erase the reality of suffering but transforms it with God’s love and the promise of redemption.
As we navigate the complexities of life—both its joys and its sorrows—we are invited to welcome this same light into our hearts. Faith assures us that God walks with us, no matter how dark the path may seem. Hope anchors us in the knowledge that Christ has overcome the world, and His love is the power that renews and restores us.
If this season finds you in a place of difficulty, take heart. The call of Christ to "repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Mt 4:17) is an invitation to trust in His saving grace, to bring your struggles to Him, and to let His light shine into the shadows of your life. Like the crowds who followed Jesus with their burdens, we too can approach Him with confidence, knowing that His love never fails.
As we move forward in this season of light, let us encourage one another to stay steadfast in faith, abound in hope, and share the love of Christ with those around us. May His light guide you, sustain you, and bring you peace.
In His Light,
John Henry
Always Toward the Light
